Grand Théâtre // Théâtre des Capucins

Built in the sixties to mark the millennium anniversary of Luxembourg City, the Grand Théâtre is situated at the heart of Europe, at a cultural crossroads between France, Belgium, and Germany. Having recently undergone a major facelift and refurbishment, equipping it with state of the art stage technology, acoustics and lighting facilities, the Grand Théâtre can now accommodate high standard and exquisite productions in Opera, Theatre and Dance and can claim its place among the most sophisticated venues in Europe. With a seating capacity of up to 950, the big space can now easily host elaborate international productions requiring complex technology and elaborate machinery.

The Studio is an alternative space with a more intimate capacity of up to 350 seats, black box set up, modular concept and refined technology. It offers flexibility and total creative freedom for a panoply of experimental work.

It comes therefore as no surprise that over the course of the past seasons, the Grand Théâtre has forged close relationships and collaborated with renowned houses such as the English National Opera, the Barbican, Covent Garden, National Theatre London, Opéra-Comique, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Théâtre National de Chaillot, Théâtre de la Ville and Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, Théâtre de Caen and Théâtre National de Bretagne in Rennes, Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper in Berlin. It has received and co-produced works with internationally acclaimed houses and festivals such as Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie Bruxelles, Münchner Kammerspiele, Wiener Festwochen , Festival d’ Aix-en-Provence, Festival d’Avignon, Toneelhuis Antwerpen, Deutsches Theater Berlin and presented prestigious dance companies such as Sasha Waltz & Guests, Nederlands Dans Theater, Rosas/Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Akram Khan Company, Compagnie Montalvo-Hervieu. Choreographers such as Jirí Kylián, Mats Ek, Robyn Orlin, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Angelin Preljocaj, Michael Clark, Russell Maliphant, Gary Stewart, Javier de Frutos among others have presented their work here.

The Grand Théâtre impresses time and again with its exclusive and eclectic programming. Numerous world-class productions such as Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), as well as Medea (music Dusapin/text Heiner Müller) by Sasha Waltz, Two Lips and Dancers and Space (with NDT II), as well as Happy Days by Robert Wilson, Steve Reich Evening by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Era la Notte with Anna Caterina Antonacci, Wagner Dream by Jonathan Harvey have all had their world premiere in this magnificent venue.

With events like these, combined with its technical standard and warm welcome, the Grand Théâtre is doing justice to a European Capital at the true height of its cultural development. The scope and quality of the productions has turned the stylish venue near the Glacis into the number one choice of the international community in Luxembourg.

Following the retirement of the artistic director of the Théâtre des Capucins in 2011, the City officials decided to place both venues under the artistic responsibility of Frank Feitler, since 2001 managing director of the Grand Théâtre. By nurturing home-grown talent as well as attracting first-rate productions from abroad, the Grand Théâtre and the Théâtre des Capucins, now operating together as “Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg”, have set themselves the mission to delight existing fans and to attract new culture-lovers from the capital and beyond.
