Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker & Ictus

More information

Choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is a regular at the Grand Théâtre and hardly a season goes by without a production by the Belgian "grande dame" of contemporary dance. This is also a tribute to her impressive repertoire - which has almost been presented here in its entirety. Almost - since one of the missing works is coming this year: Rain .

Considered as one of her most important and ambitious choreographies, it premiered in 2001 and was the first of her works to have entered the repertoire of the Paris Opera Ballet in 2011. It is set to Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians which will be played live by the Ictus Ensemble for this performance at the Grand Théâtre. Rain is in many ways a continuation of the choreographic work developed in Drumming three years earlier. In Rain the mathematical structures, the relentlessly geometric use of space, the art of constant variation - all of which have eventually become recognizable signatures of the choreographer - are pushed to the limits. What holds our attention is a sort of madness of movement, a tide or fire which passes from body to body without ever settling on one particular person, choreographed to the pulsating rhythm of Steve Reich's music.

We witness the surrender of ten dancers to an irrepressible collective energy that binds each one of them to each other, a bubbling network that shares its breath, speed and that strange camaraderie that appears only beyond the limits of exhaustion.
