Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch

More information

Having secured the first ever performances in Luxembourg of the company last season, the Théâtres de la Ville are delighted to continue its relationship with the world renowned company Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. This season they bring another major work by the late German choreographer to Luxembourg: Vollmond .

Created in 2006, Vollmond (Full Moon) accentuates the profound humanity of dancers of all ages and origins as they explore solitude and the desire for love, complete with laughter and tears as well as startling vitality. Poignant, dizzying and amazing solos alternate with games of sensual or playful seduction and comical theatre sketches. Peter Pabst's amazing set design, centered around a huge lunar-like rock, serves as the backdrop for Bausch's cherished theme of water. In fact, of all her pieces, this is acknowledged to be her most extreme, most intense. The intermittent rain, alternating between fine drizzle and massive downpours, eventually create a lake. One dancer floats by while others swim, fight or frolic in the water like in a pagan ritual. A stunning piece with very powerful imagery.

» Symbol of life, of sex and a constant elemental fascination for Bausch, it also affects the movement performed within it, dragging long dresses with weight, causing slips and spills on the dancers' frequent rapid runs across the space. It conditions the unfolding action, making it dark, dangerous and stunningly beautiful. The Telegraph, Sarah Crompton
