WHAT WE DO
The New World Theatre Club in Luxembourg has been successfully staging plays in English for more than 45 years. From comedy to drama, Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams, NWTC welcomes amateur actors, directors and production crew of all nationalities. New production ideas are encouraged, and volunteers are always needed, regardless of experience.
In addition to local productions, NWTC also participates in FEATS, the Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies, where amateur
theatre groups in mainland Europe compete during four evenings of first class entertainment consisting of three one act plays per evening. NWTC has often won this festival and been invited to participate in the annual “All Winners” festival in the UK. In 2014 NWTC successfully hosted FEATS in Luxembourg.
NWTC sponsors LEATSS (Luxembourg European Annual Theatre Summer School) a collaborative, project-based, week-long, residential summer
school for actors, directors and music theatre singers as well as – less regularly – writers/devisors. It is particularly suited to amateur enthusiasts (and those who may be a little hesitant) who wish to develop and improve their practical skills, knowledge, understanding and capabilities. The aim is to enrich, nourish and nurture. To do this it provides expert professional tuition within a friendly and fully supportive environment. All tutors have a wide and impressive track record as professional theatre practitioners and teachers and the tutor-to-participant ratio is high. With 4 tutors and 40 to 50 participants, there is generally one tutor to 10 or so participants.
NWTC also has a thriving youth group with a very strong programme for young people from 10 to 18. It is unique in that it brings together participants from the different school systems in Luxembourg. Experienced directors, actors and teachers conduct regular workshops and rehearsals leading to show cases and full scale productions, from classical (Proserpina’s Promise) and magical (Peter Pan), to modern (Just another school shooting) and improvised pieces (Moments of Emotion, the Dream project). Students are encouraged to work both on stage and backstage ensuring that they learn about all aspects of a production. They are led through a carefully guided exploration of various processes employed, including those of auditons, casting, script analysis and character development.
NWTC often organises its own acting workshops and social events for members as well as providing valuable information about productions, workshops and all manner of theatre related activities taking place elsewhere in Luxembourg and the greater region.
